Scalp Micropigmentation for Alopecia Areata

In previous posts we have talked about how women are affected by alopecia areata, plus alopecia areata and scalp micropigmentation.

Alopecia Areata is a serious condition which causes patches of hair on the scalp or on the body (this may include leg and arm hair, eyelashes and arm pits) to fall out (not necessarily all at the same time). Skalptec focuses on hair loss solutions with Scalp Micropigmentation.

Alopecia affects a relatively small portion of the population (2 people in every 1000 in the UK) but nevertheless is a major hinderance for those people who may worry about their appearance whilst searching for the remedies, advanced treatments and possible cures.

Analysis and Experiencing Alopecia Areata

Alopecia can occur at any age and more than once, and can affect children as well as adults. There has been a lot of study around it being a disease which affects the immune system (white blood cells attack the skin ‘cells around the root of the hair follicle, not the actual hair follicle’ because the immune system thinks that the scalp is in a diseased state). Attacks over years can affect the effectiveness of the hair follicle to regrow hair.

With detailed examination and research a dermatologist can narrow down the reasons and probability of what is happening. For instance there could be a fungal infection or other skin diseases present such as lupus. When hair comes out of the scalp easily, this usually means Alopecia Areata is active and as long as it is active, further hair loss can occur.

Unfortunately there is no cure hence the condition is not yet fully scientifically investigated, nor is it completely understood. Sadly, Alopecia Areata can progress to total loss of hair all over the body, but on the positive side, the condition itself cannot lead to any life threatening health condition.

When the constituents of the scalp are examined and no other solution or reason can be found, a diagnosis is easier to make. When a smooth bald patch appears from nowhere, there is usually one main reason for that, and a lot of people experience either pain or a tingling sensation on that area of the scalp when it happens.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE ALOPECIA AREATA?

  1. The bald patch will usually grow air within a few months.
  2. Hair colour when growing back will start off blonde or white before getting back to the original colour and texture.
  3. You might see more bald patches some weeks after the first bald patch appear.
  4. Bald patches can be at different stages of development. The first bald patch can be in regrowth whilst a different bald patch is forming. This can be the case when many bald patches are visible around the head.
  5. Small bald patches can merge to create a larger balding area.

Alopecia Areata Treatment

A lot will depend on first your age and second how bad the disease is. Steroid injections every into the scalp are usually applied every month or so for smaller patches. Rogaine or steroid lotions can also be used in various cases. When the condition gets worse, Micanol might be advised, as well as contact hypersensitisation. Contact hypersensitisation has to be used for up to a year to see best results.

  • Steroid tablets
  • Dithranol cream
  • Contact sensitisation treatment
  • Ultraviolet light treatment
  • Scalp Micropigmentation
  • Minoxidil lotion
  • Steroid creams and scalp applications
  • Local steroid injections
  • Immunosuppressant tablets

Is there a Cure for Alopecia?

Alopecia Areata cannot be cured just yet. A large majority of people will have hair regrowth within a year without any serious treatments (if you have a lot of hair loss in the beginning, it is less likely that all of your hair will grow back), and of course the quickness of results will vary concept of genesfrom person to person.

Also in young children, the possibility of regrowth is slim, and this also applies to those people have Alopecia Areata hair loss to the back, front or side of the hairline. Recovery will not make you infallible from this disease again in the future.

New immunosuppressive treatments being researched and studied are Tofacitinib and Ruloxitinib. These aren’t available yet, but if these get approved for effective use in the future, they will be additional treatments for Alopecia Areata.

There are national associations and charities that give their support to people who have Alopecia Areata in the UK such as Alopecia UK.
