Coconut oil has many health benefits, it is one of the most versatile natural ingredients. A hair loss solution and a way to have healthier hair, coconut oil has received a lot of publicity & media coverage, positive online reviews and claims but the in depth scientific evidence and study to back that up is still currently ongoing.
Coconut oil can bring about improved health but it’s reputation as a fully proven method to reverse hair loss and grow back your hair is still being debated.
However, here you will have an insight to coconut oil, it’s benefits, what it is, how to use it, and the claims which have resulted in improved hair health, hair growth and scalp health.
What is Coconut Oil?
People have been using coconut oil for many years as a fuel, a cooking ingredient and a moisturiser and fuel. Today, the question is can it be used to help hair to grow whilst preventing hair damage?
Coconut oil is a natural product, taken from mature coconuts which are harvested from the coconut palm and it is used in food recipes. For cooking it is an alternative to olive oil, butter and lard and it has a light and slightly nutty flavour.
Currently you will also find it used as a moisturiser. The oil turns into liquid at room temperature which makes it ideal for when applying to the skin.
Different varieties of coconut oils include: organic extra-virgin, organic, unrefined, and refined options. Coconut oil is quite high in saturated fats. For further uses, the meat of the coconut can be dried to make coconut powder. It can also be processed to make coconut milk.
Can You Use Coconut Oil for Hair Growth?
Despite the lack of in depth medical and scientific research, coconut oil has helped many people to strengthen hair and improve scalp health. Hair breakage can be reduced, therefore meaning the hair can grow longer without breaking.
If your hair is thinning or if your hair has become fine, coconut oil has helped people to reduce the speed of hair loss; it has been known to affect the hair shaft to have a positive effect on the loss of protein. Applied to the scalp, the effect is moisturising and build up around the hair follicle is reduced so as to invigorate hair growth. Hair strands can be coated with coconut oil without without becoming greasy.
Important Benefits of Coconut Oil on the Hair
Coconut oil is particularly beneficial for people who have dry and damaged hair. There are three main reasons for this:
Coconut oil is rich in easily absorbed medium chain fatty acids that help to make the hair stronger.
Coconut oil contains antioxidants that can help repair hair damage or split ends, and hair will become shiny, soft and healthier.
Anti-fungal – to treat dandruff.
Coconut oil contains vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful anti-oxidant which strengthens hair strand follicles.
If your scalp is dry or if you have dandruff, you can apply coconut oil to the scalp to experience moisturising and any relief from itchy scalp. Coconut oil has been known to improve deep follicle circulation which can thin hair to become thicker and stronger.
Treat Dandruff with Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid which can combat dandruff. If your dandruff is very bad, you could add 3 drops of tea tree essential oil to the coconut oil (avoids stripping away natural oils) then apply to the scalp before you go to bed, then wash it off in the morning.
How to Apply Coconut Oil to the Hair
Use warm coconut oil so it is liquified and rub it in your hands to apply to the ends of your dry hair. Applying it warm will open the hair follicles so the oil can absorb into the hair. The oil can also be applied directly to the scalp if the scalp is dry.
You can leave it on overnight, otherwise leave on for 30 minutes and longer if your scalp and hair is very dry. Covering up the hair with a shower cap then a hot towel will increase effectiveness. (you can start to do this for 30 days every day and then assess your scalp and hair. You can then reduce applications to 2 to 3 times a week if desired).
Remember to rinse the hair thoroughly. You will come to see the ideal amount of oil to use – it is ideal not to allow the hair to become greasy and heavy.
Overusing coconut oil can make the scalp too oily, and if this happens to you, it is recommended that you reduce the amount of oil you use, or stop using the oil until you are happy the scalp is not too oily.
Men and women find coconut oil nutrients useful to make the scalp healthy again and to help regrow stronger hair and hair roots.
Coconut itself contains things such as minerals, proteins, antioxidants and vitamins. So it is effective if used in the following ways:
Hot oil treatment before using shampoo
A deep conditioner after shampoo
As an overnight treatment.
